Hey ABSA family! Hope your summer is going well! As the new school year approaches, many of you might be thinking about how to make the most of your time and set yourself up for future success. One of the best ways to do that is by landing an internship. Whether you’re looking to gain hands-on experience, build your network, or get a foot in the door of your desired industry, securing an internship can be a game-changer. Here are some tips to help you land the perfect internship!
Scout Handshake, LinkedIn, and Company Websites:
Start your search by exploring company websites,
Handshake, and LinkedIn. Many companies post internship opportunities directly under the “Careers” or “Jobs” section of their websites. Handshake is a platform designed specifically for students and recent graduates, offering a wide range of internship listings that you can filter and customize to match your preferences. LinkedIn is another powerful tool where you can not only find job postings but also connect with professionals in your field.
Network:
Networking is key to unlocking hidden opportunities. Attend industry events, career fairs, and join professional groups related to your field of interest. Reaching out to alumni, professors, or professionals for informal interviews (coffee chats) is also a great way to gain insights into the industry or company you're interested in and might lead to referrals down the road.
Know When to Apply and Apply Early:
Understanding the recruitment cycle of your target industry is crucial. Many companies start recruiting for interns 1-2 years in advance, so it’s important to research and note the application deadlines. Networking with recruiters can also give you insight into when to apply, helping you maximize your chances.

Mock interviews can be very helpful and can be scheduled with UW’s Career and Internship Center. Utilize UW resources such as Foster Career Services or the Career and Internship Center to get your resume and cover letter reviewed. Professionals at these centers can provide you with valuable feedback and help you present your qualifications in the best light.
Be Persistent and Positive:
The internship hunt can be challenging, and rejections are part of the process. Stay persistent and keep a positive attitude. Learn from each experience and keep improving your approach.
